India Women stormed into the semifinals of the Asian Games women’s cricket competition with an eight-wicket victory over Japan in their quarterfinal on Friday. After choosing to bowl first, India dismissed Japan for 57 in 19.5 overs before chasing down the target in only five overs.
Sree Charani led India’s bowling attack with four wickets, while Shafali Verma claimed two. Shreyanka Patil and Deepti Sharma picked up one wicket each. Japan’s batting struggled against the Indian attack, with Ayaka Kato-Stafford top-scoring with 25 from 47 deliveries.
India began their chase of 58 aggressively, reaching 59/2 in five overs. Shafali Verma produced a spectacular unbeaten 40 from just 15 balls, striking four boundaries. Gunalan Kamalini was dismissed for a duck, while Bharti Fulmali scored six before being dismissed.
Richa Ghosh joined Verma at the crease and remained unbeaten on 12 from six deliveries. With India needing just one run to win, Verma finished the contest in emphatic fashion by hitting Shimako Kato over long-on for a six. India completed the chase with 90 balls remaining.
The victory confirmed India’s place in the last four, with the semifinal line-up now decided. India will face Bangladesh on Sunday, while Pakistan will meet Sri Lanka in the other semifinal. The defending champions will now look to continue their campaign after a convincing quarterfinal performance. Their disciplined bowling restricted Japan to a low total, while Verma’s explosive innings ensured India completed the chase quickly. Japan could not capitalise on India’s two early batting dismissals, allowing the Indian side to progress comfortably into the semifinals of the women’s cricket competition.
