National Space Day 2026 was celebrated at the Pilikula Regional Science Centre on Friday with a series of programmes highlighting India’s achievements in space science.
Mangaluru Press Club president P.B. Harish Rai said the occasion helps keep alive the historic achievement of Indian scientists in successfully landing the Vikram lander near the Moon’s south pole.
Inaugurating the programme, Rai said the Moon has fascinated people for generations through stories, poems and traditions. He noted that education and scientific progress have helped people understand the Moon and space beyond imagination and cultural beliefs.
Science Centre director Dr. Ashok K.R. urged students to approach every subject with a scientific attitude and develop the habit of asking questions. He encouraged them to expand their knowledge, use available opportunities and make thoughtful choices while planning their future.
Pilikula Development Authority Commissioner Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty N, who presided over the programme, highlighted the contribution of scientists to India’s development through research and innovation. He encouraged young people to participate in scientific research and use innovation, teamwork and leadership to contribute to the country’s progress. He said India is steadily advancing in science and technology.
The programme included an information session and demonstration on OMO radio by Rohit S. Rao of the Mangaluru Amateur Radio Club. Later, Dr. Prahas Amin, managing director of Flash Show Technologies, spoke about astrophotography and demonstrated the techniques involved. Curator Jagannath compered the event, while Academic Assistant Chanchalakshi welcomed the gathering and Scientific Officer Vignesh Bhat proposed the vote of thanks. About 150 pre-university students and teachers participated in the celebrations.
