Intro: Rusted barrage gates in Yadgiri are causing heavy water loss, affecting farmers and raising serious concerns
Yadgir
In a major case of neglect, the Hirenoor–Kandalli bridge-cum-barrage across the Bhima River near Saidapur in Yadgir taluk has fallen into disrepair, leading to heavy water leakage and distress among farmers. The barrage gates, once vital for irrigation, have rusted and become almost non-functional.
Farmers allege that due to the damaged gates, large amounts of water are continuously leaking downstream, even flowing into neighbouring Telangana. This has resulted in a huge loss of valuable water resources, especially during a year of low rainfall.
Built at a cost of crores during the tenure of former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna, the barrage now reflects poor maintenance. Farmers say the gates cannot be operated properly, particularly during the monsoon. During floods, the gates fail to lift fully, causing uncontrolled water flow that damages crops and erodes soil.
The issue has also affected drinking water supply for people and livestock. With limited rainfall this year, the barrage plays a key role in storing water, but its poor condition is threatening both irrigation and daily needs.
Farmers have demanded immediate replacement of the old gates with modern hydraulic systems to prevent further loss. Farmer leader Maralingappa and activist Umesh K. Mudnal highlighted the urgent need for repairs.
Officials from the Minor Irrigation Department said a proposal has been submitted, but work is delayed due to pending funds. Growing frustration among farmers signals possible protests if immediate action is not taken.
