Modi mourns passing of Suriname ex-prez

New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep grief over the demise of former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, calling it an irreparable loss for Suriname and the global Indian diaspora.

In a message, Modi said he was shocked by the sudden passing of Santokhi, whom he described as a close friend. He recalled their several meetings and highlighted Santokhi’s efforts in strengthening ties between India and Suriname. Modi also noted the late leader’s strong connection with Indian culture, mentioning that he had won admiration by taking his oath in Sanskrit.

The Prime Minister extended heartfelt condolences to Santokhi’s family and the people of Suriname during this difficult time. He said Santokhi’s contribution to public service and his commitment to improving bilateral relations would always be remembered.

Modi had last met Santokhi in November 2024 during the India-CARICOM Summit held in Georgetown, where both leaders reviewed progress in bilateral ties and discussed ways to expand cooperation. Their discussions focused on enhancing partnerships in various sectors, reflecting the close relationship between the two nations.

India and Suriname share warm and friendly relations, strengthened by strong cultural links and the presence of a large Indian-origin community in the South American nation. These ties date back over 150 years and continue to play an important role in shaping bilateral engagement.

The two countries maintain cooperation through several mechanisms, including joint commission meetings and working groups in sectors such as agriculture and development. India has also supported Suriname through financial assistance, including grants and lines of credit.

Trade between the two countries remains modest but includes a variety of goods. India exports machinery, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and food products, while imports from Suriname include wood, aluminium, and other materials.
