Coach clarifies precautionary call, backs Rohit’s freedom and team’s balance strongly

Mahela Jayawardene has dismissed speculation surrounding Suryakumar Yadav being used as an impact substitute in Mumbai Indians’ opening match, stating the move was purely precautionary due to a minor niggle.

Suryakumar, India’s T20 captain, did not take the field against Kolkata Knight Riders and contributed a quick 16 off eight balls as Mumbai chased down 221 to register their highest successful run chase in Indian Premier League history. Addressing concerns, Jayawardene emphasized there was no underlying issue.

“I hope we don’t create unwanted stories. The camp is happy,” he said, explaining that Suryakumar had a slight groin tightness and was given additional rest with a five-day gap before the next game. Despite the batter’s willingness to return to the field late in the match, the team management opted for caution.

“These are valuable players, and such decisions are calculated to ensure they remain fit throughout the season,” Jayawardene added.

The coach expressed satisfaction with Mumbai’s dominant chase, led by Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, who stitched together a commanding 148-run opening partnership. Jayawardene admitted the bowlers may have conceded 15–20 runs too many but credited the batters for an “exquisite” display.

He also highlighted the tactical thinking behind including Shardul Thakur, who delivered a key spell. With multiple new-ball options like Hardik Pandya in the lineup, the team sought variety in the middle and death overs, reflecting a flexible approach to combinations.

Jayawardene noted that Rohit appears revitalized without leadership responsibilities, allowing him to play with greater freedom and composure. Drawing from his own experience, the former Sri Lankan captain said reduced pressure often helps senior players rely on instinct and rhythm.

“He is calmer and more focused. That freedom is showing in his batting,” Jayawardene said, underlining the positive environment within the Mumbai camp.
