Drivers Demand Safety Review after Bearman Crash at Suzuka

Suzuka

Formula One drivers have called for urgent safety changes following a high-speed crash involving Ollie Bearman during the Japanese Grand Prix, raising fresh concerns over the sport’s new regulations.

The 20-year-old Haas F1 Team driver spun off midway through Sunday’s race and slammed into a barrier at speed. Though he escaped serious injury, Bearman was seen limping heavily as stewards assisted him off the track. Medical checks later confirmed he had not suffered any fractures.

The incident has intensified debate around the 2026 regulation changes in Formula One, particularly the new energy management systems that can result in significant speed differences between cars on track at the same time.

Bearman encountered a dangerous situation as he approached a slower car driven by Franco Colapinto. Carrying far greater speed, he was forced into evasive action, ultimately losing control and crashing.

Several drivers expressed concern over the risks posed by such speed disparities. Carlos Sainz of Williams Racing warned that similar incidents could occur on tighter street circuits with limited run-off areas.

“We have been vocal that this issue extends beyond qualifying into racing,” Sainz said, cautioning that tracks like Baku, Singapore, and Las Vegas could pose even greater dangers under current conditions.

The sport’s governing body, Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, acknowledged the concerns and confirmed that a structured review would be conducted after the opening phase of the season. The FIA stated that any adjustments, particularly those related to energy deployment, would require extensive simulation and analysis.

Bearman himself described the crash as an unfortunate consequence of the new rules, pointing to the “massive delta speed” now seen in races. While he maintained he was “absolutely fine,” he echoed the broader sentiment among drivers that the risks had been anticipated.

The incident has reignited discussions about balancing innovation with safety, as teams and officials weigh potential changes to ensure driver protection without compromising the competitive edge of the sport.
