India starts major search for rare minerals

Blurb: India plans a startup-driven approach to mine and process critical minerals like lithium, boosting self-reliance, tech growth, and a high-tech, homegrown supply chain.

NEW DELHI

India is launching a bold new plan to find “critical minerals” buried within its own soil. Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that the nation will now focus on finding essential resources like lithium to power modern technology and reduce the need for expensive imports from other countries.

The government wants to build a fresh mining system led by energetic startups. Just as India saw a huge boom in biotech companies, the Minister believes that giving small, innovative businesses the right tools and incentives will lead to faster and smarter ways of digging. This “startup-driven” approach aims to turn mining into a high-tech industry rather than just a traditional one.

Current search efforts are already moving fast in places like Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir. However, the goal is to expand this search nationwide. To help things move even quicker, the government is working to cut through red tape. By simplifying paperwork and speeding up environmental clearances, officials hope to get mining projects started without the usual long delays.

Finding these minerals is only the first step. Dr. Singh emphasized that India must also learn to process and refine them at home. By building a complete supply chain—from the moment a mineral is pulled from the ground to when it is placed inside a battery—India aims to protect its own tech future. This move ensures the country remains strong and self-reliant in the fast-growing global digital economy.
