Karnataka Law and Tourism Minister H.K. Patil called on citizens and leaders to respect and protect the Constitution while speaking at the Republic Day celebrations held at the K.H. Patil District Stadium.
He said the Constitution, adopted in 1949, is the foundation of India’s democracy and must never be twisted for political gain. He expressed concern that people in high positions sometimes ignore its spirit while making decisions.
Despite financial challenges, he said Karnataka has continued welfare work through five guarantee schemes, helping many poor families. He noted that Gadag’s economy is growing, with average monthly per capita income reaching about Rs 22,000.
Patil said every citizen must treat even small violations of the Constitution seriously and work to strengthen democratic values.
He also urged the Central Government to support rural workers by restoring stronger job guarantee programmes, saying they help create village assets and local employment.
Highlighting heritage efforts, the Minister said steps are under way to seek UNESCO recognition for Lakkundi, a historic temple town. The state has approved Rs 10.16 crore to conserve six ancient monuments, including temples and stepwells.
He praised a local boy who honestly handed over valuable artefacts found during digging, and said the government supported his family with housing, education, and a job.
Officials, public representatives, and many students attended, joining the parade and cultural events that marked the national festival with pride and hope. Patil said true patriotism means fairness, unity, and service to all people, especially the weak and voiceless, and urged youth to carry constitutional values into daily life. Together, he said, progress becomes meaningful for everyone.
