India’s new Labour Codes promise major improvements for gig and unorganised workers, simplifying processes and boosting protections nationwide
New Delhi
The recently enacted Labour Codes will provide substantial benefits to unorganised and gig workers, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday. He noted that these workers previously had to navigate numerous forms, inspections and complex regulations, whereas the new framework simplifies procedures and ensures access to proper facilities, social security and improved working conditions. According to the minister, both employers and employees have welcomed the reforms.
Addressing the National Conference of Trade Leaders, Goyal highlighted a series of recent measures aimed at strengthening ease of doing business and enhancing worker welfare. He urged traders to promote Swadeshi products, emphasising that suppliers should clearly mention the manufacturing location on product packaging. He added that shops could also display that they sell Swadeshi goods to encourage greater visibility for ‘Made in India’ items.
Goyal further said that significant progress has been made in improving the business environment through the Jan Vishvas Bill, which streamlines procedures and reduces compliance requirements. Responding to suggestions on the concept of One Nation, One License, he proposed that states like Delhi and Maharashtra could pilot a single online portal integrating both state and municipal trade licences.
The new Labour Codes, he stressed, aim to foster industrial peace, boost productivity and support a balanced, growth-oriented work ecosystem. They promote fairness, equity and inclusivity in the labour market by ensuring uniform wage standards and providing broader social security coverage. Overall, the Codes enhance economic justice, encourage formalisation and uphold the dignity of labour.
