Delivery Agents Face Scrutiny as Police Plan Safeguards

BENGALURU

With a steady rise in crimes involving quick commerce delivery agents, the Bengaluru City Police is planning a detailed crackdown and introducing new safeguards to regulate the largely unorganised sector.

Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh has directed all police stations to conduct a station-wise review of cases involving delivery personnel, especially those related to crimes against women. The move follows a recent incident in which a Brazilian model was allegedly molested by a delivery agent at her apartment. The accused, a 21-year-old diploma student, was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.

Emphasising the need for mandatory background verification, Singh said that quick commerce platforms must verify an employee’s work history, police records, and identification before onboarding. He also highlighted the risks of cross-employment, where delivery workers frequently switch companies without any formal checks.

Police have also instructed firms to enhance safety mechanisms by maintaining real-time delivery logs, GPS-based tracking, and up-to-date employee contact details.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) Kuldeep Kumar Jain said, “This is a growing employment sector, and documentation is imperative. Many delivery agents use vehicles that are not registered in their names. Companies must take responsibility and ensure compliance.”

Industry insiders admit that while third-party agencies conduct background verification, it often lacks depth and misses crucial details. With the city’s quick commerce network expanding rapidly, the police plan to implement strict protocols to ensure accountability and public safety for both customers and delivery workers.
