Expert Group Formed to Drive Salt Reduction and Dietary Risk Mitigation at RGUHS

Government reaffirms commitment to combat lifestyle disorders through evidence-based public health initiatives.

In a significant step toward reducing dietary risks and hypertension in Karnataka, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), in collaboration with Vision for Social Development (VSD) and Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL), launched a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to steer the state’s salt reduction initiative. The expert panel aims to institutionalize evidence-based strategies to reduce sodium intake and prevent Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), strengthening Karnataka’s public health framework.

The launch event convened public health experts, policymakers, academicians, and representatives from the health and education departments to chart a strategic roadmap aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for NCD prevention.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering nutrition and preventive health initiatives across the state. Dr BC Bhagavan, Vice-Chancellor of RGUHS, emphasized that as one of the country’s leading health universities, responsibilities extend beyond academics and administration, highlighting the institution’s role in proactive public health interventions.

Dr Syed Imran Farooq, Executive Director, RTSL India, stressed the importance of intersectoral collaboration. “Salt reduction is among the most cost-effective public health interventions. Through TAG, Karnataka can institutionalize evidence-based approaches to lower sodium intake and reinforce broader NCD prevention efforts. RTSL India remains committed to translating evidence into actionable strategies for sustainable public health improvements,” he said.

Adding perspective, Dr US Vishal Rao, member of the High-Power Committee, highlighted the critical link between dietary habits and long-term health outcomes. “Policy transformation begins with awareness and evidence. By embedding salt reduction and healthier dietary practices into existing health and education frameworks, we are fostering a future where prevention is prioritized over reaction,” he noted.

A key outcome of the meeting was the launch of the Physician Training Manual, designed to equip healthcare professionals with tools to identify, counsel, and manage patients at risk of diet-related NCDs.

“We must go further to enhance student, community, and public health and well-being. It is our duty to work diligently toward finding solutions to the nation’s pressing health challenges,” said Dr BC Bhagavan, Vice-Chancellor of RGUHS.

This initiative signals Karnataka’s proactive approach to tackling lifestyle-related disorders and promoting sustainable public health interventions.
