Dharmasthala-Themed Pandals

Ganesha Pandals Embrace Dharmasthala Theme

Hubballi

Dharmasthala, which has recently been in the spotlight following the alleged mass burial case, has emerged as the central theme for many Ganesha pandals across Hubballi-Dharwad and parts of North Karnataka. To show solidarity with the revered pilgrim centre, several associations have requested idol-makers to design Ganesha idols alongside those of Lord Manjunatha, the presiding deity of Dharmasthala. Artists have responded enthusiastically, crafting unique designs that blend the two deities.

Nagaraj Uppin, Secretary of Shivaganga Nagar Gajanan Yuvaka Mandal, shared that their group had placed an order for a Ganesha idol with the Dharmasthala theme as early as eight months ago. “We have been devotees of Lord Manjunatha for decades. At the time of placing the order, we were unaware of any controversies linked to Dharmasthala. It was a collective decision to express our gratitude to the Lord, and both our members and colony residents supported it. Even now, despite the ongoing issues, our devotion to Lord Manjunatha remains unchanged,” he explained.

Artist Manjunath Hiremath said that although blending Ganesha with Manjunatha’s Prabhavali is technically challenging, he and others accepted such requests because they found the idea innovative. “When I received these orders 7–8 months ago, there was no SIT or graveyard digging issue. But now, in the midst of controversies, clients feel their choice has become more relevant. They see it as an expression of support for the deity against attempts to malign Dharmasthala’s reputation,” he added.

Rajendra Shetty, a hotelier and philanthropist, remarked that the Ganesha festival has always been unique in reflecting current affairs. “Many pandals adopt contemporary themes, and this year Dharmasthala has taken centre stage to uphold the sanctity of the place. It sends a message that faith and devotion should remain above politics and blame games,” he said.
