Maninder criticizes Jaiswal, Iyer omission from Asia CupNew Delhi

Maninder praised Jaiswal’s all-format readiness and questioned Iyer’s omissions despite consistent middle-order contributions

Former India spinner Maninder Singh has voiced disappointment over the exclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer from India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, beginning September 9. India will enter the tournament as defending champions under skipper Suryakumar Yadav, with the event seen as vital preparation for next year’s World Cup at home.

Maninder said Jaiswal deserved a place in all formats, calling him ready for any challenge. He also questioned Iyer’s repeated omissions, stressing that the middle-order batter has consistently been a positive contributor. “I really don’t know why he keeps getting left out. He is a fantastic player, and if you don’t give him opportunities now, he may be forgotten in the years ahead,” Maninder remarked.

The former spinner noted that such treatment of players has been an issue in Indian cricket, warning that constant chopping could waste proven talent. He urged selectors to adopt long-term vision instead of overlooking consistent performers.

Meanwhile, the selectors appointed Shubman Gill as vice-captain, a move Maninder sees as preparation for the future. “This clearly shows they want him to be the next captain. With Suryakumar likely having just a couple more years in T20 cricket, grooming Gill under him makes sense,” he explained.

The Asia Cup will test India’s squad balance and provide insights into the team’s World Cup readiness. With high expectations and strong competition, the absence of Jaiswal and Iyer will remain a talking point as India begins its campaign.
