Gill named deputy, Bumrah back for Asia Cup

Team India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced on Tuesday, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the side and Shubman Gill named as vice-captain. The announcement was made by skipper Suryakumar and chief selector Ajit Agarkar after the selection meeting, also attended by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

India will open their campaign against the UAE on September 10, followed by a much-awaited clash with Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai. Their last group game is against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20–26, while the final is scheduled for September 28 in Dubai.

Gill, who recently captained a young Indian side in Zimbabwe, returns to T20Is as deputy after focusing on Tests last year. His strong IPL 2025 season, where he scored 650 runs, and his impressive leadership in England’s Test series helped him reclaim a central role.

Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer missed out on the main squad despite stellar IPL performances, with Jaiswal placed among reserves. Jitesh Sharma has been picked as back-up keeper for Sanju Samson, who impressed as an opener.

The return of Jasprit Bumrah is a huge boost, alongside pacers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. The spin attack features Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, while all-round options include Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, and Abhishek Sharma.

India enters the tournament with confidence, having been in dominant T20I form since their 2024 T20 World Cup victory.
