Cairns
South Africa have made key additions to their ODI squad ahead of the three-match series against Australia, starting today in Cairns. Teen pace sensation Kwena Maphaka, 19, has been recalled after an impressive T20I series, where he picked up nine wickets, becoming the top wicket-taker.
Maphaka, who already has two ODI appearances, could feature in the starting eleven as South Africa look to challenge the Aussies with youthful energy and pace.
The spotlight, however, is on big-hitting batter Dewald Brevis, who is all set to make his 50-over debut. Brevis lit up the recent T20I series, smashing a 41-ball century in Darwin and a quick half-century in Cairns, ending as the top scorer with 180 runs.
Captain Temba Bavuma praised the young star, saying he was excited to see what Brevis could offer in the ODI format. Bavuma also returns to the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury, confirming he’ll bat at number three, behind Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram.
Other players added include Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Matthew Breetzke, and Tony de Zorzi. After Tuesday’s game, the series moves to Mackay for matches on Friday and Sunday.
