Police seize thirteen lorries for illegal sand

UDUPI

In a major crackdown against the “sand mafia,” Udupi police conducted a massive district-wide operation, seizing thirteen lorries involved in illegal transportation and overloading. The sting operation, aimed at curbing the depletion of local natural resources, targeted key routes and check-posts where violators frequently bypass strict environmental regulations.

Acting on direct orders from the Deputy Commissioner, teams from various local police stations and traffic departments fanned out across the district to inspect heavy vehicles. During the surprise checks, officers discovered thirteen trucks carrying sand far beyond the legal weight limits. Many of these vehicles were also found to be operating without valid permits or the necessary licensing documents required for transporting minerals.

The seized lorries have since been handed over to the Department of Mines and Geology. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle owners will face heavy fines and legal proceedings under strict mining laws. Beyond the seizures, police issued stern warnings to drivers and transport companies, emphasizing that environmental laws are not optional and that overloading poses a serious risk to road safety and infrastructure.

This operation, conducted on April 25, marks a significant step in the district’s ongoing battle to regulate sand mining. Local officials stated that such surprise drives will continue to ensure that the district’s natural wealth is protected from exploitation. By hitting violators where it hurts, their fleet and their finances, the police hope to send a clear message that illegal sand trade will no longer be tolerated in Udupi.
