FDA acts against online sale of poisonous datura

BENGALURU

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action against e-commerce platforms over the online sale of poisonous Datura fruits and seeds.

Officials found that Datura products were being offered on several major shopping websites, including Amazon, raising concerns about public safety. The FDA has issued notices to multiple platforms for allegedly selling the dangerous products without required approval under food safety rules.

Amazon representatives appeared before department officials and submitted documents for verification. However, they reportedly sought more time to provide detailed explanations during the investigation.

Authorities are now checking other online platforms to stop the sale of poisonous herbs, seeds, and similar products that could threaten public health.

Datura is highly toxic, and consuming its fruits or seeds can seriously affect the nervous system and may prove fatal. Officials said easy online access to such dangerous products is particularly worrying because buyers may not understand the risks.

The FDA’s action aims to prevent unsafe sales and protect consumers from potentially deadly products.
