More than 2,000 families affected by the recent floods in Surat have begun receiving immediate financial assistance after the district administration completed extensive door-to-door surveys in some of the city’s worst-hit neighbourhoods. The relief initiative aims to provide timely support to families whose homes, household belongings and livelihoods suffered damage due to heavy rainfall and flooding.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi distributed financial assistance of Rs 6,800 per family to residents of Ambedkar Nagar, Azad Nagar, Indira Nagar and Rasulabad in the Bhatar area on Friday. The assistance forms part of the Gujarat government’s relief measures to help affected families recover from the losses caused by the floods.

The financial package includes cash doles along with assistance for replacing essential household articles and clothing damaged during the flooding. Officials said the aid has been designed to address the immediate needs of families while longer-term rehabilitation efforts continue across the affected areas.

The distribution of assistance followed large-scale relief and restoration operations launched by the district administration immediately after floodwaters receded. Teams of government officials conducted house-to-house surveys to identify eligible beneficiaries and assess the extent of damage sustained by individual households.

The survey and distribution process was carried out under the supervision of District Collector Tejas Parmar and Surat Municipal Commissioner M. Nagarajan. Officials said the exercise was intended to ensure that financial assistance reaches deserving families quickly and transparently without unnecessary delays.

Addressing residents during the distribution programme, Sanghavi appealed to people living in flood-affected localities to maintain cleanliness and cooperate fully with officials engaged in the ongoing survey and relief work. He assured citizens that every eligible household would receive the assistance it was entitled to.

No affected family will be deprived of assistance, and financial aid will be delivered by reaching every household, the Deputy Chief Minister said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting those impacted by the disaster.

Sanghavi also praised the resilience shown by the people of Surat during and after the heavy rainfall. He said residents had demonstrated remarkable patience, unity and mutual support despite facing challenging circumstances. According to him, communities came together to help one another while emergency teams worked to restore normalcy in the affected areas.

Expressing confidence that the financial assistance would provide immediate relief, he said the support would help families replace damaged household items and recover from losses suffered by small businesses and other sources of livelihood.
