Eshwar B Khandre lays foundation for bridge project

MADIKERI

Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre laid the foundation stone for a new suspension bridge at Dubare in Kodagu district, aimed at improving connectivity and tourism in the region.

The project, worth about Rs 7.3 crore, will be built across the Kaveri River near Dubare and is expected to greatly benefit local residents, forest workers and tourists visiting the famous elephant camp.

The Minister said the bridge will help more than 150 families living in the Dubare Hadi area, who currently face difficulty crossing the river, especially during emergencies and rainy seasons. He added that the structure will also improve access for medical help, daily travel and tourism activities.

He noted that Dubare is a biodiversity-rich region and part of the Western Ghats ecosystem, which is home to many species of plants, animals and birds. He said protecting forests and wildlife is essential as climate change and rising temperatures are already affecting the environment.

The Minister also highlighted increasing human-elephant conflict in the state and said expert committees have been formed to study and manage the issue. He assured that funds are available for railway barricades, trenches and other safety measures to reduce damage caused by wild elephants.

He stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife and said forest officials must focus on protecting both people and animals. He also said technology will be used to track elephant movement and reduce conflict, especially during crop seasons.

Officials informed that Dubare Elephant Camp, which has a long history, also plays an important role in tourism and wildlife management, with trained elephants used for various activities including Dasara.

Along with the bridge, new staff quarters, vehicles for forest operations, and livelihood support schemes for local residents were also announced. These include distribution of bee boxes, sewing machines, and other income-generation tools for forest-dependent families.

Officials said the project is expected to improve safety, boost tourism, and support local communities while strengthening conservation efforts in the region.
