Basavakalyan Rathotsava mishap claims elderly man’s life

A 65-year-old man succumbed to injuries after a tragic accident during the Basaveshwara Rathotsava in Basavakalyan, officials said. The incident occurred during the annual temple chariot procession held at Sri Basaveshwara Temple.

The deceased has been identified as Dhanraj, a resident of Muchalamb village in Hulsur taluk. According to sources, the accident took place at the Rath Maidan when a heavy crowd gathered around the chariot procession, leading to a stampede-like situation.

During the chaos, Dhanraj reportedly came under the wheels of the temple chariot, sustaining severe injuries, including the loss of both legs. Panic spread in the area as devotees attempted to move away from the overcrowded procession site.

Two other individuals, identified as Rishabh and Bhimashankar, also suffered serious injuries in the same incident. All the injured were immediately shifted to a hospital in Kalaburagi for emergency treatment.

Despite medical efforts, Dhanraj succumbed to his injuries, hospital sources confirmed. His death has cast a shadow over the religious festivities in the region, with devotees expressing grief over the tragic accident.

Authorities are expected to review crowd management arrangements and safety measures during large religious gatherings. Further details regarding the incident and possible lapses are awaited.
