Residents of Jammu and Kashmir expressed happiness and pride after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted Kashmiri saffron to Russian President Vladimir Putin during his two-day visit to India for a bilateral summit. The gift was part of a carefully selected collection showcasing India’s rich culture, craftsmanship and heritage, aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.
Along with Kashmiri saffron, the Prime Minister also presented Assam tea, Maharashtra handicrafts, a handcrafted marble chess set and a Russian edition of the Bhagavad Gita. Among these, the inclusion of Kashmiri saffron, also known as ‘Zafran’, has drawn special attention. Grown in the fields of Jammu and Kashmir, the saffron is famous worldwide for its deep colour, strong aroma, rich flavour and health benefits.
Local residents said the Prime Minister’s choice has brought global recognition to one of Kashmir’s most valuable products. Burhan Din, a resident of Kashmir, said it was a moment of great pride for the people of the Valley. He said the Prime Minister could have chosen any expensive gift, but selecting saffron reflected his affection for Jammu and Kashmir and its identity. He also appealed to farmers to increase production as its demand may now rise worldwide.
Social activist Syed Akhtar Hussain said saffron symbolises the richness of Kashmir and the Prime Minister has helped promote it on the global stage. He said greater promotion of saffron farming could generate more jobs and reduce unemployment in the region.
Tourists visiting the Valley also showed interest in buying authentic Kashmiri saffron after hearing about the gift. They said the Prime Minister’s gesture has increased curiosity among visitors and could boost local farmers and the tourism-linked economy.
