New Delhi
India’s first commercial standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project has received regulatory approval from the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). This 20 MW/40 MWh BESS, supported by The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), is a significant step towards sustainable energy infrastructure. The project, to be installed at BSES Rajdhani Power Limited’s (BRPL) Kilokari substation, is set to be commissioned within an unprecedented timeline of 18 to 20 months.
The approval of the BRPL BESS project marks a monumental stride in integrating renewable energy sources into the grid and ensuring reliable power supply. With a levelized annual tariff nearly 55% lower than the previous benchmark, this project sets a new standard for energy affordability and accessibility.
GEAPP’s support, including concessional financing and technical expertise, has been instrumental in realizing this project. Saurabh Kumar, Vice President – India, GEAPP, expressed pride in supporting the project, emphasizing its contribution to innovation and sustainability in India’s energy landscape.
The project, a collaboration between GEAPP, IndiGrid, and BRPL, not only showcases the viability of BESS solutions but also sets a regulatory precedent for their integration into the grid. Harsh Shah, CEO of IndiGrid, highlighted the project’s importance in shaping India’s clean energy future and its replicable business model for sustainable energy deployment worldwide.
