How Suppliers Are Helping Iphone Maker Achieve Green Energy Goals

New Delhi

Billions of dollars are being invested by major companies in building a sustainable future, with innovations in clean energy, materials, and recycling aiding iPhone maker Apple in achieving its environmental objectives. Since 2015, Apple has reduced its overall greenhouse gas emissions by over 55%, aiming to further decrease emissions by 75% from 2015 levels.

The ‘Supplier Clean Energy Programme’ now backs over 16.5 gigawatts of renewable energy globally, including in India, where it supports more than 100 supplier facilities in achieving over 2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity savings last year. This resulted in the avoidance of nearly 1.7 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions, up 25% from 2022, as mentioned in the company’s ‘2024 Environmental Progress Report’.

In India, renewable energy company CleanMax has partnered with Apple to accelerate renewable energy adoption, installing 14.4 megawatts of rooftop solar installations across six industrial sites in the country. Additionally, efforts are underway to address the direct climate impact of industrial processes, such as the manufacturing of flat-panel displays, which emit highly potent fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-GHGs). Furthermore, Apple has increased its usage of recycled cobalt in batteries, with 56% of cobalt shipped in Apple batteries in 2023 sourced from recycled materials, doubling the previous year’s figure. This includes the MacBook Air with M3, the first-ever Apple product made with 50% recycled material.
