The funeral of veteran journalist and Padma Bhushan awardee Thayil Jacob Sony George, popularly known as T.J.S. George, will be held with state honours, the Karnataka Chief Minister’s Office announced on Saturday. George passed away on October 3 in Bengaluru at age 97.
Originally from Kerala, George spent much of his life in Bengaluru. He was a respected journalist, author, and biographer. He is survived by his children, Sheba Thayil and author-poet Jeet Thayil.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow, saying George enriched Indian journalism for over six decades. “With his sharp pen and uncompromising voice, he made readers think, question, and engage,” he said, offering condolences to George’s family, colleagues, and admirers.
Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy recalled George’s influential works, including his biographies and his column in The New Indian Express. “He was a rich mine of experience and literary brilliance,” Kumaraswamy said.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar called George “a towering figure in Indian journalism” and “a truth seeker.” Shivakumar noted his contributions as founding editor of Asiaweek and praised his insightful writing style.
BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra said George’s incisive columns and fearless critique enriched public discourse. “Heartfelt condolences to his family and the journalistic fraternity,” he added.
George formally ended his long-running weekly column Point of View in June 2022 after 25 years. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian journalism, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, insight, and fearless reporting.
