Renowned Numismatist Dr. AVN Murthy passes away at 91

Renowned numismatist and historian Dr. A.V. Narasimha Murthy (Alambada Venkatasastry Narasimha Murthy) passed away at a private hospital in Mysuru on Sunday following a prolonged illness. He was 91.
He is survived by his wife Kamalamba, son Dr. A.N. Santosh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of JSS Science and Technology University in Mysuru, and daughter Dr. Savita, who is based in the United States.
Dr. Narasimha Murthy held a postgraduate degree in History and pursued research at Harvard University as a Fulbright Scholar. He obtained his Ph.D. from Andhra University. He began his career in the Department of Archaeology and later served as Professor and Head of the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Mysore. He was subsequently continued as a Fellow by the University of Mysore and later served as a UGC Senior Emeritus Fellow. As a scholar and mentor, he guided 48 research scholars who were awarded Ph.D. degrees. He also served as president of the South Indian and Indian Boards of Numismatics.
Dr. Narasimha Murthy was the recipient of several prestigious honours, including the Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Award, A.S. Alasekar Gold Medal, Karnataka Sahitya Academy Honour Award, Karnataka Rajyotsava Award and Karnataka Archaeology Ratna Award. He served as president of the Third State Numismatic Conference held in Bengaluru and the 70th Numismatic Conference held in Varanasi. He also served as president of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mysuru, for more than two decades. His last rites were performed on Monday.
