Ukraine observed a day of mourning as rescuers searched rubble following Russia’s deadliest Kyiv attack this year.

Rescue teams continued searching through the wreckage across Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on Friday after a devastating Russian missile and drone assault killed at least 30 people and injured dozens more. The attack, described as the deadliest strike on the capital this year, prompted authorities to declare a day of mourning as emergency workers raced against time to locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that at least 92 people sustained injuries in the large-scale assault, while several residents remained missing. Among those unaccounted for were the parents of a 10-year-old boy who survived the attack but remains hospitalized, as well as a 15-year-old girl whose whereabouts were still unknown. Rescue operations entered a second consecutive day as crews carefully removed debris and forensic experts worked to identify recovered human remains.
Across the city, flags were lowered to half-mast in tribute to the victims. Residents gathered near damaged apartment blocks to mourn those killed while volunteers assisted emergency responders by distributing food, water, and medical supplies to affected families. The widespread destruction left entire neighborhoods scarred, with shattered buildings, burned vehicles, and debris covering major streets.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the attack, accusing Russia of deliberately targeting residential areas instead of pursuing peace. In his evening address, he stated that Russia had no justification for continuing the war beyond the use of ballistic missiles against civilian infrastructure. According to the president, more than 100 residential buildings across Kyiv suffered varying degrees of damage during the overnight bombardment, highlighting the unprecedented scale of destruction inflicted on the capital.
The violence extended beyond Kyiv. In Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, a separate Russian drone strike on a residential house claimed the lives of four people overnight. The victims included a woman and her toddler daughter, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office, adding to the growing civilian death toll from the latest wave of attacks.
The latest strikes come as the conflict enters its fifth year. Although Ukraine has managed to slow Russian advances along much of the approximately 1,200-kilometer front line and has regained limited territory in some sectors, hostilities remain intense. Russia stated that the missile and drone attacks were carried out in retaliation for Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside Russian territory.
