GAZA CITY
Displaced Gazans are huddled around laptops and cafe screens to watch the World Cup, finding hope amid war ruins. Former pro footballer Fadi Al-Arawi now watches matches from a school shelter instead of playing in stadiums, many of which are now tent cities. The Palestinian Football Association reports that the conflict has destroyed nearly three hundred sports facilities and killed one thousand athletes. Yet, residents risk their lives in public cafes, refusing to let constant fear steal their love for the game.
