Mangaluru beaches closed amid severe monsoon alert

Mangaluru beaches are under high alert as monsoon intensifies, forcing suspension of water sports and safety restrictions

Mangaluru

The district administration has imposed a high alert across major beaches in Mangaluru as intense monsoon rains continue to batter the coastal belt, triggering dangerous sea conditions and strong currents along the Karnataka coastline.

Authorities said the sudden increase in wave height and turbulent sea behaviour has made swimming and all water-based recreational activities unsafe for visitors. As a precautionary measure, all adventure and tourism-related water sports have been suspended with immediate effect until conditions improve.

Popular tourist destinations including Panambur Beach, Thanneerubavi Beach, and Someshwara Beach have come under strict monitoring, with officials enforcing safety restrictions across all shoreline zones. Activities such as jet skiing, boating, parasailing, and floating bridge experiences have been completely halted as part of emergency safety protocols.

Officials from the tourism department stated that the decision was necessary given the unpredictability of sea conditions during the peak monsoon season. Strong underwater currents and high waves have significantly increased the risk of drowning and accidents, prompting preventive restrictions across all major coastal access points.

To ensure compliance, coastal security police, local law enforcement teams, and trained lifeguards have been deployed at key beaches. Safety barricades and warning ropes have been installed to prevent visitors from entering deep waters, while continuous surveillance is being maintained during peak tourist hours.

Authorities have clarified that while beach entry is still permitted, visitors are allowed only in designated safe zones along the shore. Entry into the sea has been strictly prohibited, and violators may face legal action.

Tourists, including those arriving from Bengaluru and neighbouring regions, have been urged to strictly follow safety instructions and cooperate with officials managing crowd control and coastal monitoring operations.

The administration reiterated that public safety remains the top priority and restrictions will remain in place until the monsoon weakens and sea conditions return to normal stability.
