Kodagu MLA Mantar Gowda has defended the Karnataka government’s decision regarding the reinstatement of permission for wearing hijab in schools and colleges, stating that the order is aimed at ensuring equality and not favouring any particular religion.
Speaking at his residence in Somwarpet, he said the government’s directive does not apply to a single community and that students from all religions are free to wear their respective traditional or religious attire. He emphasised that the intention of the order is to uphold equality and protect individual rights within educational institutions.
Mantar Gowda said that no one should interfere with the religious practices of any group, and added that everyone must be treated equally in line with constitutional values. He noted that the government’s stance is to prevent religious discrimination in schools and colleges while maintaining harmony among students.
He further stated that the government would strictly implement its decision and abide by its own orders. Responding to criticism from opposition parties, he said that political attacks were expected, but the focus should instead remain on pressing issues affecting students and the education system.
Referring to other concerns, he also mentioned alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, claiming that several students were distressed due to the issue. He said that such matters deserve greater attention and should not be overshadowed by political controversies.
Mantar Gowda reiterated that whether students choose to wear saffron attire or hijab, the government’s position is to ensure equal treatment for all and prevent discrimination based on religious identity in educational spaces.
