Workers urged to use government welfare schemes

KARWAR

Workers must take advantage of government welfare schemes for a better life, said Chief Senior Civil Judge Kavita S Undodi while addressing a legal awareness programme held in Karwar. The event was organised on the occasion of International Workers’ Day by the District Administration, District Legal Services Authority, Labour Department, and Bar Association at the Taluk Panchayat Sabha Bhavan.

Justice Undodi said workers play a key role in nation building and should be aware of their rights and available government benefits. She said the Labour Department provides several schemes including pension, family assistance, disability pension, maternity benefits, accident compensation, educational aid, and funeral support. She urged workers to use these facilities and improve their living standards.

She also advised workers to focus on education for their children and ensure they are not forced into labour. She said children should be encouraged to pursue higher education and contribute to society in meaningful roles. She stressed the importance of human values and responsible parenting.

District Labour Officer Lalitha Satenahalli explained that workers are divided into organised and unorganised sectors. She said the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, formed in 2007, provides safety and financial support to unorganised workers. She added that registered workers receive a labour card and can apply for benefits through the Seva Sindhu portal. She also reported that over Rs 10 crore in assistance has been distributed to more than 1,800 beneficiaries in 2026.

Officials also highlighted laws against child labour and warned that employing children under 14 and adolescents under 18 is punishable. They urged the public to report child labour cases to helpline 1098.

Safety kits were distributed to workers during the programme attended by officials, labour department staff, and Bar Association representatives.
