Shahapur
A district-level “Basavadi Shivasharana Hindu Convention” will be held on May 18 at the CPS School grounds in Shahapur city of Yadgir district, announced Sugureshwara Shivacharya of Kumbarageri Hiremath. The event poster was released at Kumbarageri Math on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, the seer said Kanneri Swamiji of Kadasiddeshwara Math will participate in the convention. He said the programme is being organised to promote social awareness and unity, and not to divide society.
“We aim to bring people together and strengthen social consciousness. This convention is not against anyone,” he clarified. He added that the initiative seeks to highlight cultural traditions rooted in religion while encouraging collective harmony.
Responding to questions about the relevance of a Hindu convention in the name of Shivasharanas—who historically worked toward a casteless society—the seer said Hinduism represents a cultural identity and not a caste system. “We are not associating this event with any caste,” he stated.
He also rejected allegations of political backing, particularly claims that the event is sponsored by the BJP. “This is not a political programme. It is focused on protecting Hindu dharma. We are not concerned about criticism,” he said.
On the participation of Kanneri Swamiji, who had earlier faced externment proceedings, he termed the issue politically motivated and said matters have now been resolved.
Addressing concerns about caste-based restrictions in temples and mutts, he acknowledged past practices but said gradual social change is taking place. The press conference was attended by several seers and community leaders from across the region.
