NEW DELHI
Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli has expressed his deep “shock and sadness” following the untimely death of his former Under-19 teammate, Amanpreet Singh Gill. The former Punjab pace bowler passed away on Wednesday in Chandigarh at the age of 36, leaving the national cricket community in mourning.
Kohli took to social media to share a heartfelt tribute to Gill, with whom he shared a dressing room during their formative years in 2007. “Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones,” Kohli wrote. Although Gill missed out on the famous 2008 World Cup squad that Kohli led to victory, he was a vital part of the national youth setup that toured England and Sri Lanka.
A talented right-arm bowler, Gill played six first-class matches and was a member of the Kings XI Punjab during the very first IPL season. After retiring from professional play, he remained a dedicated servant to the sport, recently serving as a member of the Punjab Senior Selection Committee. His commitment to the game earned him immense respect from his peers.
Other cricket legends, including Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan, also shared their grief. Yuvraj remembered Gill as a “quiet, hardworking cricketer” who had an undying love for the game. The Punjab Cricket Association praised his lifelong passion and dedication to the state’s cricketing success. Gill’s cremation is set to take place in Chandigarh, as friends and family gather to say a final goodbye to a respected sportsman.
