Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori has underlined the importance of all-rounder Nitish Kumar, saying his presence brings crucial balance to the side and simplifies team selection in the Indian Premier League 2026.
Nitish’s absence in the previous game against Kolkata Knight Riders forced SRH into a middle-order reshuffle that failed to deliver results. However, the all-rounder is set to return for the upcoming clash against Punjab Kings, providing a timely boost to the squad.
“Every team has that one player who makes selection straightforward. Nitish, much like Marco Jansen or Marcus Stoinis, offers balance and makes my life a lot easier,” Vettori said, highlighting the flexibility such players bring to team combinations.
The coach noted that Nitish’s dual ability allows SRH to maintain depth in both batting and bowling without compromising on either front. His return is expected to stabilise the lineup, especially in pressure situations where adaptability is key.
Looking ahead to the contest, Vettori acknowledged the challenge posed by Punjab Kings, who are currently leading the points table. He described them as a team similar in approach to SRH, relying heavily on aggressive batting to dominate matches.
“They’re top of the table for a reason. Like us, they play an attacking brand of cricket and look to manage things with the ball,” Vettori observed, predicting a high-scoring encounter.
He also offered insight into the mindset of bowlers in a tournament dominated by batters. With flat pitches and soaring totals becoming the norm, Vettori emphasised that success for bowlers lies in damage control rather than outright domination.
“In conditions like Hyderabad, it’s not about bowling teams out cheaply but about limiting big overs. Sometimes figures like 1 for 40 can be a very good performance,” he explained.
As SRH gear up for a crucial phase in the tournament, Nitish’s return could prove pivotal in maintaining the balance Vettori believes is essential for success in the high-intensity IPL environment.
