7th century inscription found in Ballari

early script discovery

BALLARI

A rare stone inscription believed to date back to the 7th century has been discovered near Sukradappa hill close to Nittoor village in Siruguppa taluk of Ballari district.

Researchers said the inscription was found on a large rock surface with ancient script carved in about seven lines. Experts believe it may provide new information about early historical rule in the region.

The discovery was made near a site that is already known for Ashokan inscriptions, located about one kilometre away. The new finding was identified by researchers Ashok Abakari and Manohar C. M., who informed epigraphists for further study.

According to preliminary analysis, the script style suggests that the region may have connections to the early Chalukya period, and possibly influences from the Rashtrakuta era between the 6th and 7th centuries.

Historical researchers said the area is important as it was once part of ancient administrative and cultural zones, and more details will emerge after full translation of the inscription.

Epigraphists Maruti Bhajantri and others are currently studying the inscription under the guidance of senior researcher Gangavathi Sharanbasappa Kolkar. They said a detailed report will be released after further examination.

Local historians and researchers also visited the site and confirmed that the inscription adds significant value to the historical record of the region.

In a separate development, another stone inscription believed to belong to the Vijayanagara Empire period was recently found near Hirejantakal area.

That inscription is said to date back to the time of King Sri Krishnadevaraya and is written in Kannada and Prakrit script with symbolic carvings of the sun, moon and Shiva.

Experts said such discoveries help in understanding the political and cultural history of ancient Karnataka and provide valuable evidence of early kingdoms and their influence in the region.

Researchers believe continued study of these inscriptions will reveal more details about administration, language, and society during those historical periods.
