Buddha’s teachings shaped global civilization: DC

Yadgir

District Collector Harshal Bhoyer said that the principles and philosophy of Gautama Buddha have had a profound impact on the world and played a significant role in shaping human civilization.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Buddha Jayanti celebrations held at Lumbini Garden in the city. The programme began with the DC watering a Bodhi sapling and offering floral tributes to the portrait and statue of Buddha. The event was jointly organised by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Kannada and Culture, City Municipal Council, and the Bhagwan Buddha Jayanti Celebration Committee.

Bhoyer said Buddha was among the earliest thinkers to oppose the caste system, and his teachings of non-violence and rational philosophy continue to guide humanity even today. He noted that during the reign of Emperor Ashoka, Buddha’s message spread widely across India, Southeast Asia, and as far as Afghanistan through local languages.

Referring to Dr B R Ambedkar, the DC said Buddhism witnessed a revival in regions such as Karnataka and Maharashtra through his efforts. He added that the government is also facilitating pilgrims visiting Deekshabhoomi.

Writer Ravindranath Hosamani said Buddha’s Panchasheela, Ashtanga Marga, and 22 vows provide a path for a disciplined and successful life, helping eliminate casteism, inequality, gender discrimination, and untouchability.

MLA Chennareddy Patil Tunnur, who presided over the function, said Buddha’s message of peace, truth, non-violence, love, and compassion remains relevant for building a meaningful life.

The programme was attended by senior officials and Buddhist monks. Earlier, a procession was taken out from Dr B R Ambedkar Circle and concluded at Lumbini Garden.
