U.S. investigates NFL for alleged unfair business

Washington

The U.S. Department of Justice has officially launched an investigation into the National Football League (NFL) to determine if the league is using unfair business tactics. The probe focuses on whether the NFL’s broadcasting deals are hurting fans by making it too difficult and expensive to watch games.

In recent years, the league has shifted many games away from free local channels to various paid streaming services. Regulators and fans alike have expressed frustration over this trend. According to the Federal Communications Commission, watching every game last season required ten different subscriptions, potentially costing a single fan over $1,500. This shift has raised concerns that “Big Tech” companies are monopolizing sports, which could also weaken local TV news stations that rely on sports broadcasts.

The NFL defended its practices on Thursday, stating that 87% of its games still air on free TV. They emphasized that games are always available for free in the local markets of the teams playing. However, lawmakers are now questioning a 1961 law that allows sports leagues to sell their media rights as a single package, an exemption that usually protects them from antitrust rules.

This investigation aims to see if those old rules still apply in the modern world of digital streaming. As the government looks closer at these multi-billion dollar deals, the goal is to ensure that football remains accessible to the average viewer without requiring a dozen different monthly bills.
