China’s PLA threatens US underwater dominance

BLURB: China is dramatically modernising its submarine fleet, even though developments remain cloaked in secrecy; the USA has traditionally held a comfortable lead over China in terms of underwater warfare.

China is rapidly modernizing its underwater arsenal, signaling a major push to end the United States’ long-standing lead in undersea warfare.

By expanding its fleet of nuclear and conventional submarines and investing in “smart” ocean technology, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is transforming into a formidable global force.

According to U.S. Navy intelligence, China’s submarine fleet is expected to grow to 70 vessels by 2027 and potentially 80 by 2035. This expansion isn’t just about numbers; it’s about high-tech firepower. The PLAN is currently building advanced next-generation submarines, including the Type 096, designed to carry ballistic missiles with stealth capabilities that rival the world’s best.

Tech leaps & strategic shifts

  • World First: China has reportedly begun arming conventional submarines with hypersonic YJ-19 missiles, a move that significantly increases their strike range and speed.
  • Mass Production: Massive investments in shipyard capacity now allow China to build multiple nuclear-powered submarines at the same time, a feat few nations can match.
  • Undersea Networks: Beyond ships, China is deploying unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and seabed sensors to create a “networked” surveillance web across the Indo-Pacific.

Despite these advances, experts say the U.S. still holds a critical “surveillance edge.” Within the strategic First Island Chain, American systems are currently better at detecting Chinese movements during peacetime. However, Chinese officials are betting that their new stealth technology and unmanned systems will eventually “blind” U.S. sensors, giving the PLAN the freedom to operate undetected across the Pacific and beyond. For the first time in decades, the “silent service” of the deep is becoming a very loud part of the global power struggle.
