Sergey Lavrov will visit India on May 14 and 15 to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The visit comes as India holds the BRICS presidency for 2026, with discussions expected to shape key outcomes for the upcoming summit.

According to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, the meeting will help decide the framework and direction of final documents to be presented during the summit. Alongside the multilateral event, Lavrov is also expected to hold bilateral talks with S. Jaishankar and other senior Indian officials.

BRICS, formed in 2006, originally included Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2011. The group has expanded in recent years, with countries like Egypt, Iran, the UAE and Ethiopia becoming full members in 2024, followed by Indonesia in 2025. Several other nations have also joined as partners.

Earlier, Lavrov highlighted the strong ties between India and Russia, describing the relationship as a time-tested partnership based on trust and mutual respect. He expressed hope for continued high-level engagement, including a possible visit by Narendra Modi to Russia in 2026.

The visit follows Russian President Vladimir Putin’s trip to India in late 2025, which strengthened strategic cooperation between the two nations. Bilateral trade reached around $60 billion in 2025, with both sides aiming to increase it to $100 billion by 2030 through deeper cooperation in trade, technology and connectivity projects.
