Blurb: Soni said that meaningful negotiations require both sides to move closer through dialogue, which involves compromise, where each party gives up certain demands to reach a balanced outcome

A former diplomat has said that Iran is unlikely to agree to conditions imposed by the United States, stressing that any talks will happen on Iran’s own terms. Vidya Bhushan Soni made these remarks while responding to recent comments by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that Iran was eager to reach a deal.
Soni pointed out that Trump’s statements appeared contradictory. He noted that while the US President invited Iran for negotiations, he also issued strong warnings and outlined strict conditions. According to Soni, such mixed messaging reflects a strategic approach rather than a clear policy direction.
He emphasised that Iran, with its deep-rooted history, culture, and national pride, is unlikely to accept external pressure easily. Instead, it will approach any negotiation from a position of self-respect and independence.
Explaining the current situation, Soni said both countries are putting forward their initial standpoints before formal talks begin. These early positions are often strong and opposing, as each side tries to establish leverage. He added that this phase is a normal part of diplomatic engagement.
Soni further explained that meaningful negotiations require both sides to move closer through dialogue. This process involves compromise, where each party gives up certain demands to reach a balanced outcome.
He also noted that before entering serious discussions, both nations will internally review their priorities and limits. Only after understanding each other’s positions and agreeing on basic rules will formal negotiations begin.
According to Soni, the final goal is to find a “common ground” acceptable to both sides, which can only be achieved through patience, dialogue, and mutual adjustments.
