According to three Pakistani government officials, China played a key role in calming tensions between the two neighboring countries after weeks of escalating violence along their shared border. The mediation efforts reportedly included a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping urging both sides to de-escalate hostilities.
The message was conveyed during a meeting late last month between Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Officials said the communication emphasized the need for restraint and encouraged both countries to avoid further escalation of military action along the border.
The border between Pakistan and Afghanistan stretches roughly 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles) and has long been a flashpoint for tensions. However, officials noted that in recent days the situation has shown signs of improvement. There have been no reports of Pakistani air strikes inside Afghanistan, and large-scale ground clashes along the frontier appear to have subsided.
Despite the relative calm, sporadic skirmishes and daily incidents are still being reported along certain sections of the border. Security forces from both sides remain on alert, indicating that the situation remains fragile.
China has publicly stated that it is maintaining communication with both Islamabad and the Taliban-led government in Kabul in an effort to encourage dialogue and prevent further conflict. Beijing has increasingly positioned itself as a regional mediator, particularly in South and Central Asia, where stability is seen as vital for trade and security.
However, Mosharraf Zaidi, a spokesman for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, did not respond to questions regarding the specifics of Beijing’s mediation efforts. In the past, Zaidi had indicated that formal talks with the Taliban government were unlikely. Pakistani security officials have also stressed that the country’s military campaign against militant groups will continue until its objectives are achieved.
