Stalin criticizes BJP over Oppn MPs’ suspension

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday strongly criticized the BJP-led Union government over the suspension of eight opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha, calling it undemocratic and politically motivated. He said silencing elected representatives undermines parliamentary democracy, which should be a platform for debate, accountability, and transparency.

Stalin questioned why the Centre seemed unwilling to face scrutiny on national security and governance raised by Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi. In a social media post, he asked why the government was “fearing” the questions, stressing that MPs have a duty to raise public concerns, and the government must respond.

The Chief Minister demanded immediate revocation of the suspensions, warning that denying MPs the right to speak weakens democratic institutions and sets a troubling precedent. He emphasised that a healthy democracy requires open debate and discussion rather than curtailing dissenting voices.

The suspensions came after dramatic scenes in the Lok Sabha during the Budget session. Seven Congress MPs and one CPI-M MP were suspended for the remainder of the session for unruly conduct. The incident began when Rahul Gandhi cited parts of an unpublished memoir of former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane while questioning the 2020 India-China border conflict. The Chair disallowed the reference, prompting protests that escalated into repeated disruptions, leading to disciplinary action.

Stalin joined other opposition leaders in criticizing the move, saying Parliament should remain a forum for discussion on matters of national importance, including security and economic issues. He warned that stifling debate threatens democratic norms and accountability, reiterating that elected representatives must be allowed to participate fully in legislative proceedings to protect the interests of the public.
