Rahul Gandhi criticised the government after Donald Trump’s comments, comparing leadership responses with historical examples
New Delhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took a dig at the central government following remarks made by US President Donald Trump about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi shared an old video from a previous speech to underline what he called the difference between past and present leadership. The comments came after Trump spoke about tariffs imposed on India and his relationship with Modi during an event in the United States.
Trump said Modi was unhappy over higher tariffs linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil. He claimed the Indian prime minister had reduced such imports after Washington’s pressure. Trump also described his meetings with Modi and said they shared a good relationship despite disagreements.
Reacting on social media platform X, Gandhi posted the message “Farq samjho, sir ji” and shared a video recalling the 1971 war. In the clip, Gandhi said former prime minister Indira Gandhi did not bow to American pressure even when the US sent its Seventh Fleet. He contrasted this with his claim that Modi had surrendered after a phone call from Trump during an India Pakistan military standoff.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also criticised the prime minister, questioning the benefits of public diplomacy events held with Trump. He said slogans, hugs, and social media praise had not helped India’s interests.
Trump has announced tariffs totalling 50 per cent on Indian goods, including a levy related to Russian oil purchases. He also spoke about delays in the supply of Apache helicopters to India, saying changes were being made. The Congress has repeatedly accused the government of failing to protect national interests amid growing pressure from Washington. The debate has intensified political exchanges ahead of upcoming parliamentary sessions and national discourse.
