Rajinikanth’s iconic 1999 blockbuster Padayappa is all set to return to theatres on December 12, coinciding with the superstar’s birthday and marking his 50 years in cinema. The announcement has created massive excitement, especially after the release of the digitally enhanced re-release trailer. Fans have already begun securing tickets in advance, leading to a surge in bookings across several theatres.
Directed by K.S. Ravikumar, the original film featured a star-studded cast including Sivaji Ganesan, Ramya Krishnan, Soundarya, Nassar, Lakshmi and Radharavi. With music by A.R. Rahman, the film broke box office records in 1999 and remains one of Rajinikanth’s most celebrated productions. In a recent 30-minute interview, Rajinikanth spoke about how Padayappa was created. He revealed that the character of Nandini from Ponniyin Selvan inspired the film’s storyline and that he initially thought of casting Aishwarya Rai for the role eventually played by Ramya Krishnan. He also shared how the climax was shaped with the legendary Sivaji Ganesan and how Ramya Krishnan’s iconic look was developed with great detail.
As Padayappa returns after 25 years with improved visuals, fans are preparing for a grand celebration, making the re-release a major event for Tamil cinema.
