Govt weighs higher subsidy for Basava Housing beneficiaries

The Karnataka government is considering a significant revision to the financial assistance offered under the Basava Housing Scheme, with plans to provide a minimum subsidy of ₹3–4 lakh to selected beneficiaries. Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan informed the Legislative Council that frequent complaints have been raised about the current subsidy being insufficient for constructing homes, particularly in rural areas where the cost of raw materials has sharply increased.

Responding to a question from BJP member Pradeep Shettar, the minister said the government acknowledges the growing financial burden on beneficiaries and is actively reviewing proposals to enhance assistance across various housing schemes. He added that discussions have already been held with the Chief Minister, and the proposal to increase subsidies is likely to be considered during the upcoming state budget.

Khan further clarified that, except for centrally sponsored housing schemes, there is no pending subsidy release under state housing programmes. As of the end of October 2025, the government has disbursed ₹1324.26 crore to eligible beneficiaries under different housing schemes for the 2025–26 fiscal year.

The minister emphasised that the revised subsidy structure aims to ensure that beneficiaries can realistically complete house construction without financial strain. With rising construction costs affecting rural and economically weaker households the most, the government’s proposed enhancement is expected to offer meaningful relief and strengthen the overall execution of state housing initiatives.

This renewed push comes at a time when the Basava Housing Scheme continues to be a key state initiative supporting affordable housing for disadvantaged sections across Karnataka.
