CJI Bhushan Gavai has recommended Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge, as his successor.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R. Gavai on Monday formally recommended Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor. Justice Kant, next in line by seniority, will assume office upon Justice Gavai’s retirement on November 23 and is set to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India, serving until February 9, 2027.
According to officials familiar with the matter, CJI Gavai handed over his recommendation letter to Justice Kant earlier in the day, following the Union government’s October 23 communication requesting him to name his successor as per convention.
In a statement, Justice Gavai described Justice Kant as “suited and competent in all aspects to take the helm,” adding that he would be “an asset to the institution as its head.” He also reflected on their shared backgrounds, noting that Justice Kant’s life experiences would help him empathize with those seeking justice and equality.
Justice Kant, who will be the first Chief Justice from Haryana, has had a distinguished judicial career. He became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana at 38, was elevated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004, and later served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018. He joined the Supreme Court in May 2019.
Known for his balanced temperament, administrative acumen, and commitment to judicial reform, Justice Kant is widely respected for promoting consistency across high courts and strengthening the district judiciary.
The government is expected to issue the official notification soon, paving the way for Justice Kant’s swearing-in on November 24, marking a new phase in the leadership of India’s judiciary.
