In a major crackdown ahead of Diwali, Ahmedabad Police on Sunday seized foreign liquor worth over Rs 2.06 crore from two city zones and destroyed the stock under official supervision, officials said. The move is part of an enforcement drive to ensure compliance with the Gujarat Prohibition Act.
Police sources said Zone 5 in Ahmedabad East recorded seizures worth Rs 1.69 crore during raids in areas such as Ramol, Nikol, Odhav, Rakhial, Gomtipur, Bapunagar, and Amraiwadi. Meanwhile, Zone 7, covering Sarkhej, Vasna, Satellite, Bodakdev, Vejalpur, Ellisbridge, and Anandnagar, confiscated liquor worth Rs 37 lakh.
The seized liquor was destroyed at two separate locations with bottles laid on the ground and flattened under bulldozers. Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners, along with government department representatives, were present during the demolition drive.
Through the operation, Ahmedabad Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining law and order during the festive season and curbing illicit liquor trade.
Despite Gujarat’s long-standing prohibition under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949, the scale of illicit liquor trafficking remains substantial. Government data shows that up to December 2022, liquor worth around Rs 212 crore, including Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), country-made liquor, and beer, was seized. In 2024 alone, around 82 lakh IMFL bottles valued at nearly Rs 144 crore were confiscated. The State Monitoring Cell also registered 455 cases, seizing liquor and related items worth about Rs 52 crore.
The latest seizure highlights the police’s strict vigilance during the festive season to prevent illegal alcohol circulation in the city.
