CM Siddaramaiah assures action after Minister Priyank Kharge seeks ban on RSS activities.

Karnataka considers banning RSS activities on government premises

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is once again in focus in Karnataka as the state government considers banning its activities on government premises. The organisation, which recently celebrated its centenary, has faced nationwide bans thrice in India’s history.

Minister Priyank Kharge had requested the ban in a letter dated October 4, citing concerns that RSS shakas and sloganeering in government and aided schools, public grounds, parks, and other state-controlled locations were influencing children and youth against national integrity and constitutional values. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured that “necessary action” would be taken following the minister’s appeal.

Though the RSS has no formal nationwide ban currently, some states and institutions have imposed restrictions in the past. In Kerala, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) barred RSS drills, mass exercises, and arms training within temple premises, stating that temples should be used solely for rituals and festivals to maintain peace and prevent divisive activities.

Historically, the RSS was banned in 1948, 1975, and 1992 due to its links with major political and communal controversies. The bans were later lifted, often with conditions. In 2024, the Union government removed a 58-year-old restriction preventing government employees from associating with the RSS.

Karnataka’s possible move to restrict RSS activities on state premises marks a significant step in the ongoing debate over the organisation’s role in public life, youth engagement, and use of government-managed spaces, reflecting concerns over social harmony and ideological influence.
