Taiwan criticizes China’s UN claim, cites misrepresentation

Taipei

Taiwan has strongly criticized China for misusing a United Nations resolution to justify possible military action and falsely claim representation over the island. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, passed in 1971, does not mention Taiwan and does not authorize the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to represent Taiwan at the UN. In a post on X, the ministry emphasized that only Taiwan’s democratically elected government represents its 23 million citizens and that Taiwan is not part of the PRC.

The criticism follows China’s release of a position paper reaffirming its “one-China” principle. Beijing claimed the resolution supports its view that the PRC is the only legitimate representative of all China, including Taiwan. Taiwan, however, argues that the resolution merely recognized the PRC as China’s UN representative and does not address Taiwan’s status.

Taipei called China’s interpretation a “deliberate attempt to mislead,” warning that it seeks to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and create a legal excuse for future military aggression.

China’s paper stated that the resolution confirms there is “only one China” and that the PRC government fully represents it internationally, including the Taiwan region. Beijing insists Taiwan is a breakaway province and that the resolution confirms its sovereignty.

Taiwan has rejected that claim since 1949, maintaining that its future must be decided by its people, not imposed by Beijing or international misinterpretation.
