SC denies extension of Vikas Yadav’s interim bail

New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the interim bail plea of Vikas Yadav, serving a 25-year sentence for the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma heard Yadav’s appeal against the Delhi High Court’s September 9 order, which had denied an extension of interim bail.

Yadav sought bail citing his upcoming marriage and the need to arrange over Rs 54 lakh towards the fine imposed in his sentence. The bench noted that granting bail could lead to a “never-ending process”, pointing out that personal milestones like marriage and children could repeatedly be cited.

Senior advocate Guru Krishnakumar, representing Yadav, explained logistical difficulties, including arranging documents and mobilizing funds. However, the top court refused to grant interim relief.

Yadav, 54, son of UP politician D P Yadav, had spent over 23 years in jail. His cousin Vishal Yadav was also convicted, and another co-accused, Sukhdev Pehalwan, completed his 20-year sentence earlier this year.
