Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted that India’s artisans represent not only livelihoods but also the nation’s rich cultural heritage and spirit of self-reliance. To support and promote this community, he launched the PM Vishwakarma Scheme on his birthday, September 17, 2023. The initiative aims to modernise traditional crafts, provide artisans with financial and technological support, and open new avenues for growth and global recognition.
Gujarat has emerged as a leading state in implementing this scheme effectively under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s guidance. In just two years, the state has delivered tangible results, improving artisans’ skills, capacities, and economic well-being. Financially, loans worth over Rs 390 crore have been sanctioned to more than 43,000 artisans, with over Rs 290 crore disbursed to 32,000 beneficiaries. The state has also completed a rigorous three-tier verification process for over 2.14 lakh artisans, ensuring transparency and credibility.
Skill development has been a core focus, with more than 1.81 lakh artisans trained to enhance their craftsmanship. Gujarat has also established a state-level helpdesk addressing over 17,500 queries, providing swift grievance redressal and boosting beneficiaries’ confidence. Registrations are carried out via Common Service Centres (CSCs), with verification at Gram Panchayat/ULB, District Implementation Committee, and state-level MSME-DFO committees.
